This article discusses BREEAM, the English system of certification of ecological buildings. It features designs that have received a top rating, including a district in the town of Upton (Northampton) and the headquarters of DEFRA in Alnwick. Established in 1990, BREEAM sets ecological requirements for retail spaces, courthouses, residential buildings, schools and universities, hospitals, prisons, and ecological homes. Unlike LEED, the American system, the criteria for assessing ecohomes include ‘longevity of architecture’. Evaluation categories for the sustainable home are as follows:
Energy efficiency / CO2
Water efficiency
Purity of water
Disposal of construction waste materials
Recycling of household rubbish
Use of materials
Lifetime homes
